John Ocwieja, Personal and Business Specialist with Hoopis Group in Chicago, knows a thing or two about financial strategies for family businesses. It’s not just because he’s earned the designation of Certified Family Business Specialist; it’s literally in his blood – his family has owned a successful manufacturing and wholesale distribution company for eight decades. John’s mission is to help people achieve financial success for themselves, their families and their businesses. Whether the need is for key employee retention or a benefits package, or a business owner’s individual retirement or estate plan, John knows the rules, the challenges and fine points to provide his clients with solid strategies based on his extensive knowledge and experience.
Throughout the Chicago area and major metropolitan markets, John is known for his expertise, professionalism and highly trusted advice. For nearly 18 years he has guided family business owners, business partners, and corporate management with plans to help protect their businesses, provide employee and executive benefits, create a succession plan, and prepare for any challenges the future may bring.
In addition to his work with family-owned and closely-held businesses, John has earned the designation of Chartered Special Needs Consultant, specializing in providing financial services for families with special needs. He has a thorough understanding of, and many years of experience in estate and tax planning concepts, special needs trusts, government programs, and the emotional dynamics of working with people with disabilities and other special needs and their families.
John chose to affiliate with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) because MassMutual’s long history of providing value and superior service to customers fit well with his own business model. As a result of his success as a financial professional, John has qualified a number of times for the company’s prestigious Blue Chip Council and Top of Council awards. John has been quoted and featured in Best’s Review, the Chicago Tribune, US News & World Reports, and the Wall Street Journal. He is a widely sought speaker, discussing topics such as generational family wealth, business planning, succession planning, exit strategies, executive compensation, risk management and tax advantaged strategies.
John is active in his community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Chapter of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. He’s a member of the Entrepreneurs Institute in Chicago, and a sponsor of, and lecturer at the Loyola University Family Business Center. A graduate of Indiana University, he has continued his education with industry related courses in investment management, economics, financial planning and risk management, and is currently working toward Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy and Retirement Income Certified Professional designations from The American College of Bryn Mawr, PA. Outside of work John enjoys fine dining, travel, theatre and attending sporting events, and spends much of his non-work time in San Diego. John’s relationships with his clients are so strong that they often go far beyond business to friendship. His clients – his friends – trust and respect the level of service he provides and can verify the importance of that trust.
